Some memorable quotes from the NYT Auburn article

I'd like to hear from the Auburn graduates out there on this issue. As I said in my first post, this isn't good for anyone, and it is an issue that will, now that the article is out, will have to be addressed. If I'm an Auburn graduate that worked hard for my degree, I'm going to be upset by these quotes.

Once players arrive at Auburn, they tend to find themselves clustered in the same classes.

“When you’ve got more than five or six athletes in one class, you’re guaranteed to have fun,” said Robert Johnson, a tight end who left Auburn in 2003 and now plays for the Washington Redskins. “Class is guaranteed to not be as hard as the rest of your classes, especially if you’re winning.”

Mr. Heilman left Professor Petee in charge of the sociology department, something that stunned many around the university. That left the department divided, and it was what led Professor Gundlach to decide to retire after next year.

“Things have reached a point where we’re getting ready to produce more James Brooks incidents,” Professor Gundlach said. “It’s embarrassing.”

I'm an '01 AU grad and I'm not terribly surprised, although I am very disappointed. I love college football as much as anyone else, but having a successful football team is not worth devaluing my degree.

I don't see how Tuberville could not have known about this. If he did, then he was incredibly stupid to tout the team’s academic achievements so vocally. If I were cheating (or even bending the rules) I sure wouldn't want to draw attention to myself.

I'm curious to see if the 75% non-athlete students taking this prof's course get unusually high marks as well.
